Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mom in both of the two episodes she appeared on Roseanne. However, her parents did not let her perform until she was an adult because of the effects stress would affect their child. Perry was shy during high school and was not a performer. The actress began her acting career in the year 2000 at Northwestern University to gain friends after she was transferred from Boston University. When she graduated, Perry moved to New York to search for television work landing small roles in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent but homesickness brought the actress back to California and she was able to find theatre jobs. In 2013, she was a part of The Other Place on Broadway with her mother. She performed with her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry starred in nine episodes of the ABC drama The Family. Her father played her character in her role on the ABC Drama Scandal. The actress also portrayed her young Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon, a CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. Despite her family link to the character, she was offered the role through an audition.
